Government to Spend Sh131 Million on New Tuition Block at Nyandarua National Polytechnic

Nyandarua, Kenya – September 20, 2025: The government has announced a Sh131 million allocation for the construction of a modern tuition block at Nyandarua National Polytechnic, part of its ongoing programme to upgrade national polytechnics and technical institutes across the country.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos made the announcement during the institution’s second graduation ceremony since it was elevated to national status. He also revealed that the polytechnic will benefit from the construction of 1,500 hostel units under the Affordable Housing Programme to improve student accommodation.

The CS commended the institution for creating a conducive environment for learners and emphasized the government’s goal of expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) enrollment from the current 700,000 trainees to 2 million by 2026. He noted that the ministry is investing in modern equipment, establishing more institutions, and supporting students through a need-based funding model combining scholarships and loans.

“We are modernising facilities to ensure inclusion, and through the student-centred funding model, no learner will be denied education due to lack of resources,” said Migos. He added that TVET remains a key driver of Kenya’s social and economic development.

On secondary education, the CS disclosed that 1,600 laboratories will be built in schools that currently lack the facilities, preparing learners for STEM pathways at senior school level. He also stressed the importance of accurate data in ensuring efficient disbursement of capitation funds and other resources, such as teacher deployment and provision of textbooks.

Addressing the ongoing lecturers’ strike, Migos said the government has already released Sh2.73 billion to universities to settle part of the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). He urged lecturers to return to work and embrace structured dialogue as directed by the Employment and Labour Relations Court.

The graduation ceremony, also attended by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano and TVET Principal Secretary Dr. Esther Muoria, saw more than 1,500 students graduate, marking another milestone in the growth of Nyandarua National Polytechnic.
