Nairobi, Kenya – February 11, 2025 – Tensions flared in the National Assembly on Tuesday as Azimio MPs took over the majority side of the chamber, following a court ruling that stripped Kenya Kwanza of its majority status. The move resulted in significant disruptions, with the Azimio MPs demanding Speaker Moses Wetangula honor the court’s ruling and step down from his position.

At 2:30 PM, just before the afternoon session was set to commence, Azimio lawmakers arrived in Parliament and occupied the majority side, in line with a recent High Court ruling that had declared the Kenya Kwanza coalition no longer the majority. The ruling, issued by Justices John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah, also ordered Wetangula to vacate his position due to a perceived conflict of interest, given his leadership role in Ford Kenya.

The situation quickly descended into chaos, with Azimio MPs, led by Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo, blocking Kilifi North MP Owen Baya from discussing the Auditor General’s report. The disruptions forced Speaker Wetangula to address the situation, but the tense atmosphere continued to escalate as Azimio MPs raised further concerns.

Millie Odhiambo, speaking on behalf of the Azimio lawmakers, called for Wetangula’s resignation, citing the conflict of interest and the High Court’s directive. “Speaker Wetangula should step aside and allow his deputy, Gladys Boss, to take over,” Odhiambo insisted. She further argued that Wetangula should officially recognize Azimio MPs’ leaders, declaring Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo as Majority Whip, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed as Majority Leader, and Masinga MP Robert Mbui as Deputy Majority Leader.

The controversial ruling by the High Court has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political landscape, igniting a heated debate over the future of Speaker Wetangula’s position. As the situation remains fluid, political observers are closely watching how the events unfold in the coming days.

For now, the National Assembly remains in turmoil, with the Azimio MPs asserting their presence on the majority side, while Speaker Wetangula faces mounting pressure to adhere to the court’s decision.
