Maji Moto Ward to Benefit from Trachoma Mass Drug Administration

Maji Moto Ward in Narok South Sub-County is scheduled to undergo a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) initiative aimed at eliminating trachoma, a prevalent eye disease among pastoralist communities. The exercise, sponsored by Operation Eyesight Universal in collaboration with the Narok County Government, will provide free Azithromycin medication to all residents from March 17th to 21st, 2025.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Narok, Operation Eyesight Universal Program Manager Edwin Simiyu outlined plans to collaborate with health personnel to administer the drug. The approach includes house-to-house visits and school-based distributions to achieve comprehensive coverage.

Trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can lead to blindness, is transmitted through direct contact with infected eye discharge and by flies carrying the disease. Symptoms include eye redness, pain, discharge, irritation, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. Repeated infections can cause eyelid scarring, leading to the in-turning of eyelashes toward the eyeball, resulting in severe pain, further scarring, and eventual irreversible blindness, often by the age of 40.

Preventive measures against trachoma include promoting good sanitation and hygienic practices, along with the provision of clean water sources. Early treatment is crucial to prevent complications and blindness. Residents of Maji Moto are encouraged to participate in the free drug administration to protect their eye health and contribute to the eradication of trachoma in the community.
