Police have arrested four suspects linked to the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was gunned down in a shocking incident along Nairobi’s Ngong Road on May 1.
The arrests were made during a high-stakes Saturday night operation in Eastlands, Nairobi, led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)’s Operational Support Unit. Authorities believe some of the suspects are affiliated with the notorious criminal gang ‘Mjahidin,’ previously implicated in a series of violent robberies across the city.
According to the National Police Service, intelligence gathered from earlier leads placed the suspects at the scene of the assassination. Police say one of the suspects was found hiding in an apartment near United States International University (USIU), where the alleged getaway vehicle was also recovered. This breakthrough led to the arrest of three more individuals believed to have participated in the plot.
“Following detailed analysis, our officers launched a swift operation and successfully apprehended four suspects who had been positively identified at the scene,” said Muchiri Nyaga, the NPS Director of Corporate Communication.
In a parallel operation in Dandora, two motorcycles believed to have been used to track the MP before his death were confiscated. However, the firearm used in the fatal shooting remains unaccounted for.
Authorities have described the killing as a “well-orchestrated assassination.” Witnesses reported that the MP was ambushed by a lone gunman on a sport bike who fired multiple shots into the passenger side of the lawmaker’s vehicle at close range. The assassin then sped off, disappearing into traffic before police could respond.
DCI detectives are now examining CCTV footage from surrounding areas and interviewing key witnesses, including the MP’s driver and security personnel. Forensic teams also visited Parliament Buildings, where the MP had spent the day on official duties before his untimely death.
President William Ruto, while speaking in Suna East on Sunday, vowed that the government would pursue justice relentlessly. “We lost our MP Ong’ondo, and I want to assure you that those who were involved will not go scot-free,” said the President. “They have nowhere to hide. Lawlessness and violence cannot be part of our culture.”
Nyaga urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work without interference. “We ask everyone to avoid speculation or political statements that could hinder progress,” he said.
As the country reels from the assassination, security agencies have intensified efforts to dismantle armed gangs and assure citizens of safety ahead of a politically sensitive period.
