How KEBS is Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Revolutionize Standards in Kenya
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is taking a bold step into the future with the planned adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of its modernization efforts. This move aims to enhance operational efficiency, improve market oversight, and strengthen surveillance mechanisms across the country. As technology continues to reshape industries globally, KEBS is keen to align its practices with cutting-edge innovations to serve Kenyan citizens and businesses better.
Embracing AI for Better Standards Management
Speaking in Kisii during a public participation forum on the proposed Draft Code of Practice (DKS 1515:2025) for the inspection of road vehicles, KEBS Manager Augustine Wachira revealed that the organization is working on modalities to integrate AI into its systems. Wachira explained that this initiative would allow KEBS to reach a broader customer base, efficiently monitor compliance, and stay ahead of the evolving market landscape.
“Artificial Intelligence offers us a unique opportunity to boost our efficiency, especially in marketing, surveillance, and service delivery. It’s time for KEBS to embrace innovation to keep pace with national and global standards,” said Wachira.
The draft code, currently under public review, is part of an ongoing effort to revise standards in line with sectoral changes and stakeholder feedback. The last major revision took place in the year 2000, making the current process both timely and necessary.
Stakeholder Participation
Wachira, who is also leading the KEBS Draft Standard Technical Committee, emphasized that public participation is a crucial element in the standards review process. He urged stakeholders across the country to cooperate with KEBS surveillance teams, which have been visiting various outlets to train industry players on detecting counterfeit products and fake standardization marks.
“Much has changed in the industry since our last revision. To ensure we remain relevant and effective, it is vital that we listen to those affected by our standards—the manufacturers, importers, distributors, and consumers,” he added.
Promoting Transparency and Avoiding Regulatory Conflict
KEBS Technical Committee Manager Betty Nkatha underlined the importance of collective responsibility, openness, and consensus in the standards revision process. According to Nkatha, aligning with other regulatory frameworks and avoiding conflict requires careful consideration and inclusive dialogue.
Similarly, Technical Committee Chairperson Esther Kyuvi noted that broad-based stakeholder involvement will enhance the legitimacy and acceptance of the revised standards. This approach also reduces the likelihood of legal disputes that may arise from unilateral implementation.
“We’re not just setting standards—we’re building consensus. This ensures that when the new regulations are finally adopted, they are supported by the majority and understood by all,” said Kyuvi.
Nationwide Consultations Ahead of Legal Adoption
The stakeholder engagement process is already underway, with public participation forums held in Mombasa and Kisumu. Additional forums are scheduled for Nakuru, Nyeri, and Meru in the coming weeks. These consultations are a prerequisite to gazettement and subsequent adoption of the revised standards into law.
Once the consultation phase concludes, the proposed standards will undergo a six-month review and finalization period before being officially adopted.
A Future-Ready KEBS
As KEBS gears up to integrate Artificial Intelligence, the agency is not just responding to current challenges—it’s preparing for the future. By using AI to streamline inspections, enhance data analysis, and detect anomalies in real time, KEBS aims to set a new benchmark in regulatory efficiency in Kenya.
This bold initiative signals a new era where technology meets trust, and where regulatory agencies like KEBS lead the charge in creating a safer, more efficient, and more accountable marketplace for all Kenyans.
