In 2025, high school teachers in Kenya are in for a salary boost under the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which takes effect on July 1, 2024. The salary revisions come with backdated arrears starting from July 2024, providing teachers with additional financial benefits. Here’s a breakdown of the new salary ranges for different teacher designations:

  • Chief Principals (D5, T-Scale 15): Ksh. 131,380 – Ksh. 159,534
  • Senior Principals (D4, T-Scale 14): Ksh. 118,242 – Ksh. 143,581
  • Principals & Deputy Principals I (D3, T-Scale 13): Ksh. 105,182 – Ksh. 127,069
  • Deputy Principals II & Senior Masters I (D2, T-Scale 12): Ksh. 92,119 – Ksh. 110,551
  • Senior Masters II & Deputy Principals III (D1, T-Scale 11): Ksh. 78,625 – Ksh. 95,101
  • Senior Masters III & Head Teachers (C5, T-Scale 10): Ksh. 62,272 – Ksh. 78,667
  • Secondary Teachers I & Senior Teachers I (C3, T-Scale 8): Ksh. 44,412 – Ksh. 56,514
  • Secondary Teachers II & Senior Teachers II (C2, T-Scale 7): Ksh. 36,621 – Ksh. 45,776

Along with these new salary scales, the TSC has also introduced various allowances to help address the cost of living and other unique circumstances for teachers:

  • Housing Allowance: Ranges from Ksh. 3,850 to Ksh. 50,000 per month, with higher amounts for urban areas.
  • Commuter Allowance: Between Ksh. 4,000 and Ksh. 16,000 per month, based on grade, to cover transport costs.
  • Leave Allowance: Paid annually, ranging from Ksh. 4,000 to Ksh. 10,000.
  • Hardship Allowance: Additional amounts between Ksh. 6,600 and Ksh. 38,100 per month for teachers in hardship areas.

These adjustments aim to align pay with teachers’ responsibilities and experience, ensuring equity while acknowledging the dedication educators show. By providing appropriate remuneration and allowances, the TSC hopes to sustain a motivated and committed workforce, encouraging teachers to stay engaged in their roles.
