M.P. Shah Chania Girls High School in Thika has recently undergone significant transformations, enhancing its educational infrastructure and environment. Established in 1962 as M.P. Shah High School, the institution was initially a mixed day and boarding school serving a diverse student body. In 1967, it was renamed Chania High School, and by 2000, it split into separate schools for boys and girls to cater to their distinct educational needs.

In October 2024, the school honored its founder, Meghji Pethraj Shah, by reverting to the name M.P. Shah Chania Girls High School. This rebranding attracted renewed interest and investment from stakeholders. The Shah family played a pivotal role by funding the construction of two modern classrooms and an ablution block, effectively alleviating congestion and providing a more conducive learning environment for the over 2,000 students enrolled.

The school’s high academic standards have led to a surge in student enrollment, resulting in overcrowded facilities. To comply with the government’s 100% transition policy, the administration had previously resorted to using makeshift tents as temporary classrooms. The recent infrastructural developments have addressed these challenges, ensuring that students have access to proper learning spaces.

Water scarcity had been a persistent issue for the school, exacerbated by erratic supplies from local providers. Recognizing this challenge, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) from Thika Barracks assisted by drilling a borehole within the school premises. This initiative secured a steady water source, benefiting both the school and the surrounding community.

In October 2023, the school received a donation of 10 computers from the Thika Water and Sewerage Company (Thiwasco). This contribution aimed to enhance IT training and encourage more female students to pursue careers in technology. The donation addressed a shortage of functional computers, ensuring that each computer science student had access to a personal computer, thereby improving their academic performance in the subject.

Under the leadership of Principal Mary Mwangi, M.P. Shah Chania Girls High School emphasizes a holistic approach to education.
