West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has launched a major humanitarian relief food initiative aimed at combating malnutrition and food insecurity in the wake of persistent crop failure, flooding, landslides, and the effects of climate change. The initiative, unveiled at the Fire Station Offices compound in Kapenguria Town, includes the distribution of 10 tonnes of fortified porridge flour specifically targeted at Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) learners.
Over 7,400 children enrolled in 1,194 ECDE centres across the county are expected to benefit from the nutrition-rich food, which is designed to improve health outcomes and boost school attendance and retention in vulnerable areas.
In addition to the porridge distribution, the governor also flagged off 2,350 chairs and 30 tables for ECDE centres, along with emergency maize and beans supplies for hard-hit wards including Suam, Lower Riwo, Tapach, and Chepareria. Governor Kachapin emphasized that the initiative is part of a sustained countywide response, not a one-off effort, and called for transparency in the food distribution process.
He also noted the county’s investment in long-term agricultural solutions such as irrigation to support farming in arid zones. Deputy Governor Robert Komolle and CECM for Education Rebecca Kide both lauded the initiative for reinforcing early childhood nutrition and laying the foundation for lifelong learning, while Public Service CECM Martin Lotee confirmed that relief supplies would be delivered within two days to the most affected regions.
