The program, which begins in January 2026, is designed to provide practical exposure to the Bank’s operations and strategic initiatives. It reflects AfDB’s broader mission of fostering sustainable economic growth and social progress across the African continent.

According to the Bank, the internship initiative aims to attract talented individuals who share its vision of building a prosperous and resilient Africa. The program offers placements across a wide range of disciplines that support the institution’s operational and corporate priorities.

Successful applicants will be placed in departments such as Agriculture, Engineering, Finance, Economics, Investment, Sustainability, Risk Management, Procurement, Operations Management and Programming, and Delivery and Performance Monitoring. Additional areas include Human Resources Management, Information Management Technology, Translation and Interpretation, Communication, Governance, Corporate Advisory Functions, and Real Estate Management and Services.

The Bank emphasized that interns will work under the supervision of seasoned professionals to gain valuable exposure to AfDB’s strategic work, policies, and development programs. The experience is expected to strengthen participants’ technical and professional competencies while fostering a deeper understanding of Africa’s economic and social landscape.

The AfDB runs two internship sessions per year. The first session for 2026 begins in January, while the second session is scheduled to start in July 2026, with applications for that cohort expected to open in April 2026.

The Bank confirmed that the selection process for Session 2 of the 2025 Internship Program has already concluded, with successful interns currently onboarding across its various regional and country offices.

To qualify for the program, applicants must meet the Bank’s eligibility criteria, which include being enrolled in a master’s-level degree program or having recently graduated, demonstrating a passion for Africa’s development, and possessing strong analytical and communication skills.

Application Process
Interested candidates are required to submit a complete online application via the AfDB’s official website (www.afdb.org) and attach a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV). Only applications submitted through the Bank’s online recruitment platform will be considered.

The selection process is highly competitive, with thousands of applications received each year from across Africa and the diaspora. The Bank’s Human Resources Department reviews submissions to ensure alignment with the institution’s core areas of focus and strategic goals.

Once selected, interns will gain exposure to ongoing development projects, participate in analytical research, and contribute to initiatives that align with AfDB’s High 5 strategic priorities:

  1. Light up and Power Africa

  2. Feed Africa

  3. Industrialize Africa

  4. Integrate Africa

  5. Improve the Quality of Life for the People of Africa

Through the internship, participants also get an opportunity to engage in knowledge exchange, mentorship, and professional development activities that prepare them for future leadership roles in Africa’s development sector.

The AfDB, headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, remains at the forefront of financing and supporting transformative projects that drive inclusive growth across the continent. With a presence in over 40 African countries, the Bank’s internship program offers participants a unique vantage point to understand the realities and opportunities within Africa’s rapidly evolving economic landscape.

The announcement underscores the institution’s commitment to investing in Africa’s next generation of leaders, emphasizing that empowering young people through practical training is vital for achieving long-term development goals.

Interested and qualified applicants are encouraged to apply early before the deadline to maximize their chances of consideration. All internship opportunities, guidelines, and application links are available on the official AfDB website at www.afdb.org.
