Cabinet Approves Jobs and Training Boosts, Healthier School Meals

The Cabinet, meeting on Thursday, August 14, approved a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening Belize’s workforce, improving student nutrition, and advancing regional cooperation.

A new program will expand access to jobs and training, with a focus on women and youth. Training institutions such as ITVET will be equipped to better align skills development with labor market needs. Cabinet also endorsed three new international labor standards on workplace safety, harassment, and biological hazards, while approving a full review of Belize’s Labor Act to modernize protections for workers.

In education, the Ministry of Education received approval to roll out the Belize School Food and Nutrition Policy, which will expand on the National Healthy Start Feeding Program that already benefits more than 15,000 students. The new policy aims to ensure healthier meals and promote good nutrition practices in schools nationwide.

Regionally, Belize participated for the first time in COSEFIN—the Council of Ministers of Finance of Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic—strengthening collaboration on fiscal policy, trade, transport, and energy.

Finally, Cabinet reminded all Belizeans to stay prepared this hurricane season by reviewing family emergency plans and keeping disaster kits ready.
