Constable Kills Senior Officer, Dies by Suicide in Siaya Shooting Tragedy
Siaya County, June 29, 2025 — Tragedy struck Ng’iya Police Post in Alego Usonga, Siaya County, when a police constable shot and killed his senior officer before turning the gun on himself in a shocking early morning incident.
According to police reports, the assailant, Constable Martin Mwendwa, stormed into the residence of Corporal Chesise around 6:00 a.m., armed with a G3 rifle. He broke down the door and opened fire at close range, hitting the corporal multiple times in the chest and hands, fatally wounding him.
After the fatal shooting, Constable Mwendwa fled the scene and was seen heading toward Ng’iya Girls High School, firing shots into the air. Moments later, he reportedly shot himself dead at the school’s gate. However, some witnesses claimed that the constable may have been shot by responding officers during the ensuing chaos. This detail remains under investigation.
The bodies of both officers were taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted.
The incident sent shockwaves throughout the village. Locals described the slain officers as some of the most effective in addressing crime in the area, further deepening the community’s grief.
This is the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving police officers. In March 2025, a similar altercation at a bar in Gigiri, Nairobi, led to the death of an officer and injuries to another. In February, another officer fatally shot a colleague in Ruaraka, Nairobi.
Authorities have described the incidents as isolated but alarming. Experts point to occupational trauma and mental health issues within the service as possible underlying causes.
In response, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has established a mental health and counselling unit aimed at supporting officers’ wellbeing. The unit focuses on trauma prevention, substance abuse counselling, and community outreach programs.
“Police officers face immense pressures. They are the first responders to every crisis, often with limited support, and their mental wellbeing is critical to the safety of our communities,” said a senior official from the NPSC.
Separately, a police officer injured during the June 25 protests in Embu County has been discharged from hospital. He was among more than 300 officers injured nationwide during the violent demonstrations.
