DEFABA Excels at Africa Zone III Boxing Championships

Nairobi, Kenya, October 27, 2025 – The Defence Forces Amateur Boxing Association (DEFABA) showcased outstanding performance at the Africa Zone III Boxing Championships held at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, clinching a total of seven medals as part of the Kenya national boxing team.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) athletes dominated several categories, with Corporal Veronica Mbithe and Senior Private Friza Anyango earning gold medals, while Corporal Peter Abuti, Chris Ochanda, and Cynthia Mwai claimed silver. Sergeant Edwin Okong’o and Corporal Abednego Kyalo completed the team’s strong showing with bronze medals.

National Team Coach James Wasao praised the KDF boxers for their professionalism and tactical discipline, noting that their training ethos greatly enhances Kenya’s competitive edge in regional contests.

“I am glad to work with KDF personnel because they are highly disciplined and tactically proficient,” said Coach Wasao.

Colonel Martin Njuguna, representing DEFABA, congratulated the Kenyan team for their spirited effort and commendable results, emphasizing that such performances reinforce Kenya’s reputation in African boxing.

International champion Sergeant Edwin Okong’o described the tournament as a vital opportunity for developing regional boxing talent and strengthening collaboration among East and Central African nations.

“This championship is a stepping stone for regional boxing talent and significant for both national prestige and spotting future continental and global athletes,” said Okong’o.

Gold medalist Senior Private Friza Anyango also highlighted the importance of the event in exposing athletes to new levels of competition.

“It’s not every day that you get to meet new challengers, especially among lady boxers. This tournament has given me a platform to face new opponents who are instrumental in my growth,” she remarked.

Overall, Team Kenya finished second behind DR Congo, collecting five gold, ten silver, and eight bronze medals. The championship drew competitors from twelve African nations and served as a crucial preparatory event for upcoming continental and global competitions.
