Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has made his first official visit to the Wamunyoro residence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marking a significant political gesture that has drawn attention across the country.
The visit took place on Saturday and comes amid growing political engagement among key opposition leaders. Dr. Matiang’i, who has recently re-emerged into the national spotlight, was warmly welcomed by Gachagua, who used the opportunity to reflect on the broader significance of their meeting.
Quoting former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Gachagua shared a powerful message:
“The struggle of today is not altogether for today – it is for a vast future also.”
He added, “Welcome to Wamunyoro, my brother, Dr. Fred Matiang’i.”
The former Deputy President’s words suggested that the political journey they are undertaking is rooted in long-term goals and generational change, not just immediate battles.
Dr. Matiang’i’s visit to Wamunyoro followed closely on the heels of his well-attended meet-the-people tour in Kisii and Nyamira counties, where he received a warm and enthusiastic reception. His recent engagements have fueled speculation about his political ambitions and possible alliances.
On Saturday, he joined a host of senior political figures who were also visiting Gachagua’s home. Among them were Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, NARC Kenya’s Martha Karua, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and former Cabinet Secretaries Justin Muturi and Mithika Linturi. Former MP Kabando wa Kabando was also in attendance.
This gathering, which brought together leaders from across the opposition spectrum, has raised eyebrows in political circles, with many viewing it as the beginning of broader coalition-building efforts.
The visit to Wamunyoro comes just days after these leaders met in Nairobi for a high-level political dialogue. Observers say it could signal the start of a new phase in the opposition’s strategy moving forward.
