The Cabinet of Kenya, chaired by President William Ruto, has approved the dualing of the 20.2-kilometre Nairobi Northern Bypass in a move aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving mobility across Nairobi and Kiambu counties. This road upgrade is part of a broader infrastructure strategy to expand road capacity in response to increasing traffic volumes and rising urban transport demands. The bypass, which currently operates as a single carriageway, will be transformed into a dual carriageway to significantly reduce travel delays, transport costs, and pollution caused by persistent traffic jams.

The Nairobi Northern Bypass has long been a bottleneck during peak hours, disrupting economic productivity and commuter efficiency. The new dual carriageway will incorporate eight interchanges, overpasses, underpasses, walkways, cycle paths, and modern drainage systems.

These enhancements are designed to improve road safety, support non-motorised transport, and better link the bypass to surrounding economic and industrial hubs. Stretching from Ruaka to Ruiru, the bypass connects both the Western and Eastern Bypasses and plays a vital role in Nairobi’s road network.

In alignment with the country’s urban renewal goals, the Cabinet also approved the implementation of the Nairobi Railway City Central Station and Public Realm Project. This landmark infrastructure initiative will transform the current Central Station into a state-of-the-art multi-modal hub, enabling the evacuation of up to 30,000 passengers per hour.

With projections indicating passenger growth to 400,000 daily by 2030 and 600,000 by 2045, the station is poised to become Nairobi’s premier transport interchange. The project includes secured funding for key transit links such as BRT Line 3, commuter rail services, and a standard gauge railway connection to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. These developments aim to unlock economic potential, drive urban regeneration, and attract private sector investment into the heart of Nairobi.
