Kenya to Build Modern Construction

The National Construction Authority (NCA), under the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, is set to construct a state-of-the-art Center for Construction Industry Development (CCID) on 6.4 acres at the Konza Techno-Polis in Machakos County. The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary for Lands and Public Works, Alice Wahome, during her visit to the designated site for the development.

Wahome confirmed that the designs for the CCID are already in place and construction is set to begin soon. The modern center will feature a research facility focused on developing quality and affordable building materials and will serve as a center of excellence for upskilling within the construction industry.

“The CCID will house a comprehensive research facility that will focus on creating affordable materials for the construction sector, ensuring that industry standards are maintained while adapting to current trends,” CS Wahome said.

The NCA, through a lease agreement with Konza, is now authorized to take over the 6.4-acre site for the center. The first phase of the project, which covers 2.4 acres, is estimated to cost Sh3 billion and is expected to be completed within three years. The entire development of the CCID is projected to cost Sh9 billion, though this figure may change over time.

In addition to the research and training facilities, the center will also include a conference facility, training institute, and accommodation, offering long-term benefits and a return on investment.

Konza CEO John Okwiri encouraged more investors to get involved in the project, highlighting that 100 acres have already been allocated to various investors who are at different stages of construction within the techno-city.

Once completed, the CCID will play a pivotal role in enhancing Kenya’s construction industry by fostering innovation, improving quality standards, and promoting the use of sustainable materials and technologies. The project is also expected to create significant employment opportunities and contribute to the growth of the economy.
