KNEC Announces Pay Rates for 2025 KJSEA Examiners.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released details of the remuneration teachers will receive for marking the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) — the first-ever national assessment under the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. The marking exercise, set to run for two weeks in November, follows the completion of the exams held between October 20 and November 3, 2025. Results are expected to be released in December.
According to KNEC, each examiner will earn KSh 35 per script and a basic allowance of KSh 1,500. Examiners will also receive a daily coordination fee of KSh 250 throughout the marking period. The total payment will depend on the number of scripts marked by each teacher. The Council emphasized that these rates apply to all learning areas featuring open-ended or creative-response questions, while multiple-choice sections will be processed using Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) machines.
The marking centres designated for the 2025 KJSEA include top institutions such as Moi Girls’ Nairobi (Kiswahili), Alliance High School (English and Creative Arts & Sports), Mary Hill Girls (Social Studies), Isinya Girls (Integrated Science), and Pangani Girls (Pre-Technical Studies), among others.
KNEC noted that it had already trained examiners earlier in the year—both virtually and through residential sessions at various teacher training colleges. To qualify for training, teachers were required to be TSC-registered, possess at least a Diploma in Education, have three years of teaching experience, and pay a training fee of KSh 10,500. Those aged 50 years and below were prioritized.
The Council further clarified that the KJSEA marks a key transition assessment, enabling Grade 9 learners to move to Grade 10 in January 2026. Unlike traditional examinations, candidates will receive comprehensive report forms instead of certificates. Learners will only be issued a single national certificate—Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCBE)—upon completing Grade 12, signifying the end of basic education under the CBC system.
KNEC has announced that teachers marking the 2025 KJSEA will earn KSh 35 per script, a KSh 1,500 basic allowance, and a daily KSh 250 coordination fee. The marking will take place in November ahead of the December release of results.
