Lugari Sub County Set for Sh50M Modern Market Construction at Panpaper

Lugari Sub County in Kakamega County is set to receive a significant boost with the construction of a second modern market at the Pan-paper trading center in Lugari Ward. The project, which is estimated to cost Sh50 million, will be funded under the government’s Economic Stimulus Programme, marking a major step in improving infrastructure and boosting local trade in the region.

The new market, designed as a modern storey building, will be constructed on an acre of land and will provide space for up to 200 traders. Once completed, it is expected to accommodate a growing number of businesses, with the possibility of the number of stalls reaching up to 600 on busy market days.

The official launch of the construction was marked by a ceremony attended by Polycarp Onyango, the Secretary of the State Department of Housing and Urban Planning, who handed over the site to the contractor, Intellect Contractors. “We expect the construction to be completed within six months,” said Onyango during the event. He highlighted that the market’s design would include essential amenities, including an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub for youths, a breastfeeding room for young female traders, a refrigeration center for perishable goods, and a boardroom for meetings.

The market will feature an ablution block and a water drilling system, ensuring the facility’s sustainability and hygiene standards. Onyango also revealed that plans are in progress for the construction of a modern market at Lwandeti Market in Lwandeti Ward, a hostel for about 1,000 students at Chevaywa Technical Institute, and a dormitory for 300 students at Kivaywa Secondary School in Chevaywa Ward.

Lugari Member of Parliament, Nabii Nabwera, commended the government’s efforts in facilitating the construction of these modern markets and infrastructure in the constituency. He emphasized that the development would transform the local economy and improve accessibility for traders from neighboring counties such as Bungoma and Uasin Gishu. “Soon, the Panpaper market will be surrounded by a tarmacked road, making it easier for traders and boosting economic growth,” he said.

The county government, through Kakamega County Chief Officer for Trade, Faith Gitira, has contributed to the project by providing the land for the market. Gitira also encouraged traders in the area to take advantage of the affordable loan schemes available to help boost their businesses once the new market is operational. She urged the market management committee to register current traders to ensure they are prioritized in the new development.

The construction of the Panpaper market, along with the other ongoing projects in the region, is expected to create a vibrant commercial hub, benefiting local entrepreneurs and enhancing the livelihoods of residents in Lugari Sub County.

The event also saw the presence of key local officials, including Mary Mukatia, the Lugari Sub County Administrator, and Assistant County Commissioners Wambua Mbinya and Christine Cheboi.
