The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has confirmed it is investigating 26 active cases of potential violations under the National Cohesion and Integration Act, as Kenya prepares to mark the first anniversary of the Gen Z protests on June 25, 2024. NCIC Chairperson Dr. Samuel Kobia revealed that two of the cases have already been referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further legal action. The commission emphasized its mandate to uphold peace and national unity by addressing hate speech, ethnic discrimination, and incitement in public discourse.
Dr. Kobia called on Kenyans to commemorate the protest anniversary with peace, mutual respect, and a commitment to constructive dialogue. He noted that, amid ongoing economic and social pressures, the country must prioritize inclusive engagement and avoid actions that may fuel division. The NCIC continues to enforce legal measures to ensure national cohesion and prevent the resurgence of politically or ethnically motivated violence.
In line with its peacebuilding mission, NCIC is actively promoting youth engagement through its “Transgenerational Conversation: A Quest for Political Decency and Better Governance” initiative. This program encourages young people to participate in governance while promoting tolerance and the core values of national unity. The commission reaffirmed its readiness to support inclusive conversations and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every Kenyan feels heard and respected in national affairs.
Established in the aftermath of the 2007–2008 post-election violence, NCIC plays a critical role in preventing hate-driven conflict and fostering reconciliation across Kenya’s diverse communities. As the protest anniversary approaches, the commission remains vigilant in monitoring public sentiment and ensuring compliance with the National Cohesion and Integration Act to safeguard the country’s stability and social harmony.
