Night Fire Erupts Near NSSF and Kenya Power Offices in Mombasa

May 10, 2025 — Mombasa, Kenya

A major fire broke out around 10 PM on Saturday at a building adjacent to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Kenya Power offices in Mombasa’s central business district, sending thick smoke billowing into the night sky and triggering widespread panic.

The blaze, which erupted suddenly, quickly consumed multiple floors of the building, prompting a rapid response from emergency services and the evacuation of nearby offices. Witnesses reported seeing flames leap from the upper sections of the building as fire crews battled to contain the spread.

“I saw the flames from my apartment a few blocks away,” said one resident. “It looked very serious, and sirens were going off all over town.”

The Mombasa County Fire Department arrived promptly and worked to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring structures, including the nearby NSSF and Kenya Power buildings. Firefighters remained on site late into the night, with the situation gradually being brought under control by early Sunday morning.

The full extent of the damage is yet to be established, and authorities have not determined the cause of the fire.

Police cordoned off the area to keep onlookers and traffic away from the scene, with a strong security presence maintained to support emergency operations. Electricity in the immediate vicinity was temporarily disconnected to avoid further hazards, given the proximity to key Kenya Power infrastructure.

The affected building is part of a densely developed area along Nkrumah Road, home to several commercial and government offices. The fire disrupted activities across a wide radius and raised concerns about building safety and emergency preparedness in urban centers.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to commence once the area is declared safe.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
