University Lecturer Peter Waweru Appointed Referee for Angola vs Zimbabwe AFCON 2025 Clash

Kenyan academic and seasoned football referee Peter Waweru Kamaku is set to play a central role at the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2025 after being appointed to officiate a key Group A match between Angola and Zimbabwe. The fixture will take place on Friday, December 26, in Marrakech, Morocco, placing the Kenyan official at the heart of one of Africa’s biggest football tournaments.

Kamaku, who serves as a senior lecturer at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, brings a rare blend of academic excellence and sporting experience to the international stage. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pure Mathematics and has steadily built a strong reputation within continental football officiating circles.

The Confederation of African Football selected Kamaku as part of a three member Kenyan officiating team for the group phase encounter. The match is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 pm at the Stade de Marrakech, one of the venues hosting AFCON 2025 matches. His appointment highlights Kenya’s continued presence in elite African football officiating.

This assignment marks another significant milestone in Kamaku’s refereeing career at the Africa Cup of Nations. He first appeared at the tournament in 2019, when he was entrusted with handling the final Group D match between Namibia and Ivory Coast. His return to AFCON duty underlines the confidence CAF has placed in his abilities over the years.

Kamaku also featured prominently during AFCON 2023, where he was named among the 26 referees selected to officiate as centre referees. During that tournament, he took charge of the group stage encounter between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo, further cementing his experience at the highest level of African football.

For the Angola versus Zimbabwe match, Kamaku will be supported by fellow Kenyan officials. Gilbert Cheruiyot will serve as the first assistant referee, while Stephen Yiembe will act as the second assistant referee. The fourth official role has been assigned to Morocco’s Mustapha Kechchaf, ensuring a diverse officiating team for the contest.

The Video Assistant Referee duties will be overseen by Hamza El Fariq of Morocco, with Abdulaziz Yasir of Sudan appointed as the Assistant VAR official. The use of VAR continues to play a critical role in maintaining fairness and accuracy in officiating decisions throughout the tournament.

AFCON 2025 officially began on Sunday, December 21, 2025, marking the 35th edition of the prestigious continental competition. The tournament brings together 24 national teams from across Africa and is expected to run until January 18, 2026, when the final match will be played.

Matches are being hosted across several Moroccan cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, showcasing the country’s football infrastructure on a continental scale.

In another engagement involving Kenyan officials on the same day, referee Engineer Dickens Mimisa has been appointed to serve as the Video Assistant Referee during the Group B match between Egypt and South Africa, further underlining Kenya’s strong representation at AFCON 2025.
