The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has condemned the killing of one of its staff members in Wau, located in the Western Bahr el Ghazal region. The staff member had been detained by security actors on 15 December, during which time UNMISS engaged with the relevant authorities in an effort to secure his safe release. The Mission expressed deep sorrow at this tragic loss and extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
Anita Kiki Gbeho, Officer-in-Charge of UNMISS, said the Mission was devastated by the incident. She emphasized that attacks on United Nations personnel are unacceptable under any circumstances and called for immediate action to investigate the events leading to the staff member’s death. “We are devastated by the loss of our colleague,” Ms. Gbeho said. “Such killing of United Nations personnel is unacceptable. We call for an immediate and thorough investigation to understand the circumstances of his detention and subsequent death, and to ensure those responsible are held to account.”
The Mission highlighted that the safety and security of UN staff must be respected at all times. United Nations personnel work in challenging environments, often in regions affected by conflict, political instability, and humanitarian crises. Protecting staff members is essential for the Mission to continue fulfilling its mandate of supporting peace, security, and human rights in South Sudan.
UNMISS also reiterated the need for relevant authorities to uphold international law regarding the treatment of UN staff. Ensuring accountability not only provides justice for victims but also strengthens the credibility of the United Nations and its ability to operate safely in conflict-affected areas.
This incident comes at a time when UNMISS continues to engage with local communities, government officials, and security actors to advance peace and stability in South Sudan. The Mission remains committed to protecting civilians, promoting human rights, and supporting the country’s path toward sustainable development.
The killing of a UN staff member is a grave reminder of the risks faced by personnel working in high-risk environments. UNMISS has called for a swift and transparent investigation and stressed that those responsible for this act must be held accountable. The Mission continues to offer its full support to the family and loved ones of the deceased while reaffirming its dedication to the protection of all United Nations personnel in South Sudan.
