Zambia Defence Forces Delegation Visits Kenya to Enhance Military Education and Cooperation.
A delegation from the Zambia Defence Forces (ZDF) recently visited Kenya’s Defence Headquarters, the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K), and its affiliated Colleges to benchmark educational ecosystems and enhance collaboration between the two militaries.
The delegation, led by Brigadier General Dani Eliya Banda, commenced their visit at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi, where they paid a courtesy call on the Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Planning, Doctrine, and Training, Major General Fredrick Leuria. Maj Gen Leuria reaffirmed the strong ties between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and ZDF, emphasizing that the visit provided an invaluable platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss common challenges faced by both nations’ armed forces. He further underscored the importance of regional military cooperation in fostering security, stability, and professional development within the defence sector.
Following their engagement at Defence Headquarters, the delegation proceeded to the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC), a renowned institution dedicated to enhancing peacekeeping capabilities. At IPSTC, the delegation received a comprehensive briefing on the Centre’s programs, governance structure, and its significant role in regional peace and security. The Centre provides specialized training in peace support operations, counterterrorism, and conflict resolution, making it a critical institution for military personnel across Africa.
The delegation then visited the National Defence College (NDC), one of the premier Colleges under NDU-K. The NDC plays a pivotal role in training senior military officers and government officials in matters of national and international security. The visitors were taken through the college’s curriculum, which integrates strategic leadership, security studies, and defence policy, ensuring that military leaders are equipped with the knowledge required to navigate complex global security challenges.
Later, Brig Gen Banda and his team traveled to NDU-K’s main campus in Lanet, Nakuru. They were warmly received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) for Research, Innovation, and Security Studies, Major General William Shume, who welcomed them on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Lieutenant General Gimson Mutai. The delegation was provided with a detailed briefing on NDU-K’s mandate, which encompasses training, capacity-building, research, and innovation in national security and strategic studies. As an institution of higher learning, NDU-K fosters intellectual growth and operational preparedness through its seven Colleges, contributing not only to national but also to global security efforts while promoting sustainable development.
The visit allowed the ZDF delegation to gain insights into KDF’s educational institutions and their integral role in achieving Kenya’s operational and strategic military objectives. The exchange of knowledge and best practices between the two defence forces reinforced the importance of professional military education in enhancing regional and continental security.
Additionally, the visit served as a catalyst for future collaborations in military education, research, and strategic training between the two nations. By fostering strong institutional linkages, both KDF and ZDF aim to enhance their capabilities in addressing emerging security threats and promoting peace and stability within the region. The engagement underscored the shared commitment of Kenya and Zambia to developing highly skilled, well-trained military personnel equipped to handle modern security challenges effectively.
The ZDF delegation expressed their appreciation for the hospitality extended by their Kenyan counterparts and looked forward to deepening military cooperation through continued engagements, joint training programs, and research initiatives. This visit marked a significant step towards enhancing educational and operational synergies between the two military institutions, reinforcing their mutual goal of strengthening security and defence collaborations across Africa.
