The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially opened the recruitment process for the positions of Chairperson and Commissioners. This marks a significant milestone as the commission seeks qualified candidates to fill these crucial vacancies. Applications are being accepted starting Saturday, February 1, 2025, with the deadline set for Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. East African Time (EAT).
IEBC Recruitment Details: Chairperson and Commissioners
In a notice published on February 1, 2025, the IEBC Selection Panel detailed the requirements for applicants wishing to be considered for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the IEBC. Dr. Nelson Makanda, the panel’s chairperson, emphasized the commitment to a transparent and merit-based selection process.
According to the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 (Articles 166(3), 250, and relevant sections of the IEBC Act), a vacancy for the IEBC Chairperson and six vacancies for IEBC Members have been declared. These appointments will be vital for ensuring the smooth functioning of the IEBC, which plays a key role in the electoral process across the country.
Requirements for IEBC Chairperson (1 Vacancy)
To qualify for the position of IEBC Chairperson, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum of fifteen years’ experience as a superior court judge, or
- At least fifteen years of experience as a distinguished academic, judicial officer, legal practitioner, or in other relevant legal fields, or
- An aggregate fifteen years of experience in the fields mentioned above.
Additionally, applicants must have met the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution (which addresses integrity and accountability).
Eligibility
- Candidates cannot have held office or contested elections as an MP or Member of County Assembly (MCA) in the five years preceding the application.
- Members of political parties or those holding state office are not eligible.
Requirements for IEBC Commissioner (6 Vacancies)
Applicants for the IEBC Commissioner role must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a degree from a recognized university.
- Have proven knowledge and at least ten years’ experience in one of the following fields: electoral matters, finance, governance, law, ICT, public administration, or accounting.
- Must fulfill the Chapter Six requirements on integrity.
Similar to the Chairperson’s requirements, applicants who have held office or stood for election as an MP or MCA in the last five years are ineligible, as are individuals involved with political parties or holding state offices.

Deadline for Applications
All applications and supporting documents must be received by the Selection Panel no later than Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EAT.
