MCK Emphasizes Responsible Information Consumption and Innovation Among Media Students

Meru, Kenya – February 11, 2025 – The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the importance of responsible information consumption and dissemination, particularly among media students. Speaking at the Media Information and Digital Literacy Forum for youth at Meru Institute, MCK Meru Regional Coordinator, Jackson Karanja, urged communication and media students to uphold ethical journalism standards while embracing innovation in an increasingly dynamic media environment.

“As future journalists, you carry the responsibility of ensuring that the information shared with the public is accurate, balanced, and ethical. Misinformation and disinformation pose significant threats to democracy and societal stability,” Karanja emphasized.

The forum focused on the essential role of journalism in a digital age and addressed the challenges that media students face in their pursuit of accuracy and truth. Karanja also emphasized the need for continuous learning and professional development in the media industry.

“Journalism is not merely a career; it is a calling that demands curiosity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to truth. Continuously refine your skills, stay informed, and strive to improve,” Karanja encouraged the students.

The event also explored the impact of media innovation, with Karanja advising students to leverage digital tools, artificial intelligence, and multimedia storytelling to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving industry.

“The media landscape is evolving rapidly, and those who fail to adapt risk being left behind. Use digital platforms wisely to make an impact and reach broader audiences,” he urged.

The Media Council of Kenya’s initiative is part of a broader effort to equip young media professionals with the skills and ethical grounding necessary to navigate the modern media landscape effectively, ensuring that they can contribute positively to society and combat the growing threats of misinformation.
